Melvin C. Courtney 71, retired carpenter

Melvin C. Courtney, a retired carpenter, farmer and service station owner, died Saturday at Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston of cancer. He was 71.

He was born June 14, 1911, to George and
Christie Courtney at Troy, Ore. He attended Troy schools and married Bethel E. Fleshman, at La Grande, Ore. on June 12, 1934.

The couple moved to Peck, Idaho, in 1944, and to Melrose, Idaho, three years later, where Courtney farmed. In 1959 they moved to Lewiston and in 1965 they moved to Springfield, Ore., where he was a carpenter. He built furuniture, cabinets and clocks and made hooked rugs.

When Courtney retired in 1973 the couple
returned to Lewiston.

He is survived by his wife at the family home at 419 Bryden Ave.; four sons, Lawrence of Kent, Wash., Dale of Great Falls, Mont., Gene of Pawnee, Ill., and Gordon of Lewiston; a brother, Arthur (Mick) Courtney of Clarkston; and 11 grandchildren.

Three sister preceded him in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Malcom's Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel, the Rev. Robert L. Compton of the Orchards Community Church officiating.

Burial will follow at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens. Malcom's Brower-Wann Memmorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
