Sarah Jane Arnold was born November 7, 1829 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, the first child born to William and Eleanor (Robinson) Arnold.

On July 4, 1847 Sarah Jane married to James Wesley Partlow in Rutherford County. The couple lived next to her parents' household, probably in a house on the same farm. In 1850 James Wesley Partlow was listed as a farmer but with no assets of his own.

The maiden name of the mother of James Partlow was Chloe Hooker, and Laclede County, Missouri had become the home of several members of the Hooker family including several of his uncles. In 1851 Sarah and James Wesley Partlow and their two sons, William and Thomas, moved to Laclede County, Missouri, along with her grandparents, parents and their children remaining at home. After their move to Missouri, the couple had eight more children -- Benjamin Allen, Nancy Ann, James Newton, Rosabelle, Rebecca Frances, Cloah Ellen, Robert Dean, and Edward W. Partlow.

Sarah Jane Partlow died in 1872 leaving her husband with five children still under 12, but James Wesley Partlow never remarried. He reared the younger children with the help of his older children and kept the family together. Sarah is believed to have been buried in Davis-Rose Hill Cemetery, since that is where James Wesley Partlow was buried when he died in 1901.
