James William Arnold and his twin sister, Rebecca Arvilla Arnold, were born on November 18, 1846 in Rutherford County, Tennessee to William (Billy) Arnold and Eleanor Robinson Arnold. The family moved to Laclede County, Missouri before 1860 when James was still a lad, and he grew up there.

About 1863 James married Della Ann Darrow. They lived in Laclede County at the beginning of their marriage but eventually moved to adjacent Camden County before 1880. Della and James took in Ellen Arnold, believed to be an orphaned relative who had been living with the Isaac Parrish famiy. Della also bore three children between 1864 and 1875 -- Martha Ann, James Milton and William T. Arnold. Della died in 1884 in Camden County but was buried in the Darrow Cemetery in Laclede County.

After Della's death, James Arnold remarried to Martha Ann Parrish, and had two more children -- Ellis Arnold and John Potter Arnold. They also continued to take care of Ellen Arnold.

James died of tuberculosis in 1920, leaving a will which named his daughter, Anna Arnold Piles, his son, Milt Arnold, and several grandchildren.
