Grace Small had 158 direct descendants

Grace Stinton Small, 92, longtime Akron resident and Plymouth County native, died Sunday (Dec. 16, 1990) at Brentwood Good Samaritan Home in LeMars after a long illness.

Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Akron with Rev. Burl Ratzsch officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday with an Order of Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m. at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

The former Grace Stinton was born Feb. 23, 1898, near Adaville, the daughter of William and Sarah Jane Hamilton Stinton. She attended rural school for two years at Westfield and moved to Merrill, where she graduated from high school in 1915. She married Avery Small June 14, 1915, at Elk Point. The couple operated Small's Service Station and Small's Trucking Company for 42 years in Akron. He died in 1969.

Mrs. Small was the first secretary of the Senior Citizens Club of Akron and also held other offices,. including president. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary, having served as county president. She was a member of OES and was a Gold Star Mother, having served as secretary

Survivors are two daughters, Venice and her husband, Basil Blum of Bronson, and Ramona Govig of Atlantic; nine sons and daughters-in -law, Kenneth and Evelyn, Ivyl and Phyllis, Eldon and Jo, James and Edith and Gayland and Selma, all of Akron; Clayton and Kathleen of Dunlap, Ill., and Fay and Burma of Big Springs, Tex.; a daughter-in-law, Claudia Small of Sioux City; 46 grandchildren and 91 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, William and Vernard; two daughters, Wilma and Karen; four sisters, Mary, Nettie, Eva and Marjorie; two grandchildren, Dennis and Doyle and two sons-in-law, Lyle Baldwin and Robert Govig.
