Kenneth Avery Small was born February 1, 1919 in Akron-Plymouth Co., Iowa, the son of Avery and Grace (Stinton) Small. He was baptized at First Baptist Church in Akron. He attended school at Sayles in Union County, South Dakota, and also in Akron. Following his education, he helped his father with his ice delivery business and later with his trucking business.

He was united in marriage to Evelyn Baldwin on March 3, 1942 in Pender, Nebraska. Shortly after their marriage, Ken was inducted into the United States Army on March 24, 1942 and served his country during WWII. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant with the 2509th AAF Base Unit. Following his honorable discharge on November 30, 1945, he returned to Akron. Ken went to work for Ray Jespersen, driving a gasoline transport for over 20 years. Later, he went to work with the Plymouth County Secondary Roads Department as a heavy equipment operator for many years. After retiring, he continued to work for the department part time for a few years. He and Evelyn enjoyed living on their acreage near Akron. For the past two years, Ken and Evelyn have resided at Countryside Senior Living in Sioux City.

Ken was a member of First Baptist Church in Akron. He was also a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron. Ken will be remembered for mechanical abilities, fixing or designing just about anything. He also enjoyed campers, racing of any kind, listening to music, and watching western movies.
