James Edward Gregg was born on September 2, 1885 in Paris, Kentucky. His parents were Paul Gregg and Marie Charlotte. There has been some speculation that Paul Gregg was a frenchman and his wife Marie was a "pure blood" Native American woman from Oklahoma but no records of his parents have ever surfaced with the exception of their names listed on his marriage certificate. James Edward Gregg spent time in Kentucky, Missouri, Montana, Alaska, and finally, California. He was known to wander and most of his life was spent drinking heavily. For decades, he remained missing and the family had no knowledge of his whereabouts. This man, we knew as our Grandfather, remained a mystery, returning briefly in 1953 when his daughter, Virginia Jaunita Gregg Lowney was on her death bed. James Gregg settled in the San Diego, California area where he passed away in December of 1974. It is not clear today why this man, our Grandfather remained "out of arms reach" and it wasn't until this year that I discovered his final resting place in San Diego, California. Ironically, I lived in San Diego for four years while serving in the military and lived within three miles of where he was laid to rest, yet had no idea.
