Jacob Anderson Maxwell, son of Thomas and the late Martha Brim Maxwell, was born in northern Phelps County, November 17, 1916, and passed away suddenly while in the line of duty for his country Wednesday afternoon, August 11, 1943, at Camp Ibis on the desert of California. His untimely death was caused by being struck by a bolt of lightning.
Jacob is survived by his father, six brothers: Guy of St. Louis; Carl and Louie of Rolla; Ernest with the US Army at Fort Chaffee Ark; Melvin of St. Louis; and Andrew who is serving overseas, stationed in Africa at this time. A cablegram has been sent to him advising him of his brother's death. Jacob is also survived by three sisters: Miss Nancy and Miss Sarah Jane Maxwell and Mrs. Josephine Wynn, all of Rolla.
Jacob had been in the Army for almost two years, during which time he was stationed at Camp Wallace and Camp Swift, Texas, Fort Riley and Camp Funston, Kansas, before being sent to the California Desert Camp some six weeks ago. Staff Sgt. Robert Wyss served as military escort.
Funeral service was conducted from the Wynn Cemetery Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. R. L. Maness of Macedonia Baptist Church. Serving as pallbearers were Charles Maxwell, Clifford Maxwell, Carl Maxwell, Ernest Maxwell, Guy Maxwell and Wallace Spencer. Music was furnished by the community choir.
The floral display was unusually beautiful. Three very large sprays were from his buddies at Fort Ibis, and gave evidence with the other flowers of the high esteem that this young man was held in. At the close of the service, a military unit from Fort Leonard Wood took charge and gave the final salute, followed by Taps as the casket was slowly lowered into the grave.
Burial was made in the family plot next to where his mother who passed away on January 24 this year. Null and Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
