Loving husband, father, grandfather, Richard J. Coates was born Dec. 2, 1935, in Rhinelander, passed away Oct. 11, 2011, in San Diego.

At an early age he joined the National Guard, later the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1979 with more than 26 years of service. After retirement, Richard had jobs reflecting his many interests. He taught at Coleman College, was a travel agent for Sato Travel, then a tour guide around the San Diego waterfront attractions, including the "Duck" Tours, Harbor Cruises, and Old Town Trolley Tours.

The last five years he spent as a volunteer docent aboard the USS Midway Museum, where he shared his knowledge of San Diego and military history.

Richard is survived by Joyce, wife of 51 years; daughters, Kellie (Mark) Dyer and Kristie (Mike) Wehrenberg; granddaughter, DanaLeigh Dyer, of San Diego; brother, Michael Coates of Nampa, Idaho; brother and sister in-law, L. Philip and Carol LaCroix of Woodinville, Wash.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Mary Coates; and a brother, Donald Coates.

Services to be held on Nov. 4, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Miramar National Cemetery.
