Arthur Smith
Arthur Smith, 77, of 215 N. Oak St., Toccoa, died in a local hospital early Monday morning, May 20. Mr. Smith suffered a heart attack at his residence Sunday afternoon.
The son of the late Benjamin I. and Belle Frye Smith, he was born Aug. 26, 1896 in Hart County, but had resided in Toccoa for many years. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War I and after his discharge from the army he was engaged in law enforcement work. He was with the Franklin County Sheriff's Department for a number of years and later served as police chief in Toccoa for some 37 years.
Mr. Smith was a member of and helped to organize the Georgia Peace Officers Association. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Toccoa, The Curtis Bible Class, the Toccoa Masonic Lodge and a member of The Woodmen of The World.
Mr. Smith was judge of Toccoa Police Court at the time of his death.
He was twice married, his first wife, Mrs. Willie Mae Dawkins Smith, died in 1958. His second wife, Mrs. Frances Davis Smith survives.
Survivors besides his wife, include two sons, Jack Smith of Toccoa, and Billy Smith of Spartanburg, S.C., one daughter, Mrs. Emily Smith Brady of Greenville, S.C., nine grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. F.M. Powell of Tryon, N.C., three brothers, Hughie Smith and Roscoe Smith, both of Startex, S.C., Marvin Smith of Lavonia, and a foster brother, James Smith of Spartanburg, S.C.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 4 p.m. from the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home with Rev. Ryan Seawright and Rev. Dean Head officiating.
The following members of the Toccoa police department served as pallbearers Terrell Miller, I.M. Jones, Leon Sanders, Don Shirley, Mack Thomason and Kenneth Cheek.
The honorary escort was composed of members of Toccoa police department, and members of the Georgia Peace Officers Association.
Interment was in Stephens Memorial Gardens with Acree-Davis Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
