Jonesboro- Maynell Almanza Berry Whitney, passed away peacefully at the age of 94. Maynell was born June 1, 1927, to Joseph Scott Berry and Frankie Mae Dye Berry in Forest, Louisiana. While her roots were in the deep south, she spent most of her life in Jonesboro, Maine after marrying the love of her life, Kenneth Colon Whitney on November 10, 1945.

Maynell was the eighth of nine children, born at home on a cotton farm. She graduated from Forest High School at the age of 16 on May 5, 1944. She met her future husband Kenneth, while he was stationed in Shreveport, Louisiana near the end of WW II. After marrying Ken, they traveled to Maine by train. Maynell wasn't familiar with many of the sights they witnessed during their travel north and Ken loved teasing and telling a story of Maynell asking why so many trees were painted white (birch trees). Ken always got a big laugh, Maynell, not so much, but she secretly loved him telling the story.

Maynell and Ken lived and worked in Jonesboro most of their lives where they raised their five children. For several years in the early 60's they owned and operated Whitney's General Store where they worked shoulder to shoulder, seven days a week. In 1965 the family moved to South Berwick, Maine. Here, Maynell worked at Siegel City while attending cosmetology school, graduating in 1968. Soon thereafter, the family moved back to Jonesboro and built a new home where Maynell opened Maynell's Beauty Shoppe, which she operated for many years.

Maynell's first love was her family, which was always her highest priority. Coming from a large and very close knit family herself, deepened her desire that her children and their families remain close. Nothing pleased her more than to have a huge gathering of family, gorging themselves on southern fried chicken and all the fixings.

Maynell was predeceased by her husband of nearly 50 years, Kenneth; parents Joseph and Frankie Berry, Joseph dying as the result of a cotton mill accident when she was five years old; by her stepfather, Mr. Shug Blackburn; her siblings, Mary Etta, Lillian, Ollie, Thomas Franklin (TF), Bernis, James, J.S. Berry Jr. (Jr), and Clarence (Pete).

She is survived by her children Beverly Garnett and husband Clarence of Milton Mills, New Hampshire; Scott Whitney and wife Jeanne of Jonesboro, Maine; Kathy Crossman and husband Kevin of Holden, Maine; Cheryl Hayward and husband Johnny of Marshfield, Maine; Lorraine Towns and husband Tom of Beddington, Maine; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter; many nephews and nieces in the south and many lifelong friends from Jonesboro and the surrounding area.

A memorial service and burial next to Ken in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Jonesboro, will be held in the spring. The exact date will be announced at a later time. Those wishing to may donate in her memory to the Jonesboro Union Church, where she has been a lifelong member, 24 Looks Point Rd., Jonesboro, ME 04648. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.mcclurefamilyfuneral.com.
