Mary Catharine Emerich was born was born in Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania on the 28th day of July, 1826. She made her home there during her early life and until after her marriage. In 1846 she was united in marriage with Jonathan Zerbe and remained his true and loving wife until death called her. To this union were born thirteen children, four sons and nine daughters, all of whom survive her.
In 1866 the family moved to Cedar county, Iowa, and have since resided there.
She leaves her husband, thirteen children, eighty-six grandchildren, and twenty-six great grandchildren, besides two brothers and two sisters to mourn because she has passed into the other world. At the time of her death she was aged 73 years 9 months and 13 days.
While in Pennsylvania she was a member of the German Reformed church and all her life time she was an earnest noble woman and a good mother.
The funeral services were held in the Bethel church at Green Grove, and were conducted by Rev. Angel of Tipton, Iowa. All the children with the exception of one daughter who lives in Pennsylvania, were privileged to be present to pay the last tribute of respect to her memory.
