Herman H. Benson, died about 4:30
Thursday afternoon. He, also, was an
old resident of this vicinity, having
come here in 1852. He was widely
known through this section and had
many friends.
Mr. Benson was born in Renpert,
Bennington county, Vt., on March 17,
1824 He was adopted by an aunt and
uncle, Spencer and Lucy Warner, and
made his home with them in childhood.
With Mr. and Mrs. Warner, he came
to Chicago in 1839, making the whole
trip in wagons Mr. Benson spent his
young manhood in Chicago and
attended one of the first schools of any
consequence erected in that city.
As he grew up he became a member
of the Odd Fellows, and was a charter
member of the Excelsier lodge of Chicago
It was while on a trip to Milwaukee
in the interest of the Odd Fellows
lodge that he made a side trip to Oak
Grove, Wis. and was married to Miss
Woods on June 11, 1847.
Mrs. Benson was born in Queensburg,
Warren county, N. Y., October 30, 1829.
There she lived until she was 17 years
of age.
Mr. Benson was an expert turner and
owned and operated a shop on the corner
of what is now Canal and Washington
streets, Chicago. He continued at
this business until it burned out in 1852,
when he moved to the farm northeast
of Sycamore There, they resided until
six years ago when they moved into
Sycamore, and made their home on
Center avenue.
To Mr. and Mrs. Benson were born 12
children, only four of whom are living!
Spencer W., of Early. Sac county, Ia.;
Mrs. Clara Case, of Beloit, Wis.;
Charles, of Sac City, Ia.; and Pearl B
Hinckle, who resides on the old farm;
Beside the children and grandchildren,
Mrs. Benson survives.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p. m.
Sunday at the house. Rev. Moore offici-
ating. The interment will be in Charter
Grove cemetery.
