Ephraim Gene Freed, 87, of Danville, passed away at 11:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System in Danville.

He was born March 27, 1924 in Cayuga, Indiana to Ephraim and Ethel Harvey Freed. He married Mary Morrow. She preceded him in death. He had three brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include four daughters, Judy (Tom) Marsh, Mary Jean Holstein, Julie (Rick) Lomax and Joy (Elvis) Ford and one son, Roger (Kathryn) Freed, all of Danville; two brothers, Melvin and Marvin Freed; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the Pacific from Hawaii to the occupation of Japan, making three landings, twice wounded and receiving three Bronze Stars.
