He filed an affidavit with the federal government in MCDonald County, MO in 1854 in which he stated that he was only nine years old in 1796 when his father died on Broad River. In the affidavit states that the three Davis sisters married into the family. He said that "after the funeral, he went home to Tennessee with his Uncle Davis Whelchel" and was raised in the Davis Whelchel home. May 12, 1814 William and Keziah Whelchel were married, they were first cousin, Keziah was a daughter of Davis Whelchel & Nancy Barnes Whelchel. The affidavit is quite long and it is part of the Abstracts of Revolutionary War Papers and applications. .
William Jr., son of William and Martha Davis came to live with Davis and Nancy Barnes in 1796, he recalled his father telling him, as stated in Nancy's Barnes Whelchel pension claim: that his father told him that he (William Sr.) had three brothers, two who married the Davis sisters, and one who married a Barnes. His father William Sr. was injured at the Battle of Cowpen's Jan. 17, 1781 and William Jr. was born 1787 and William Sr. died March 1, 1796.
The 1820 Census, shows William and Keziah and three children under 10 yrs. of age in Jefferson Co.,IN. Some time after 1818 they moved to Hamilton County,IN and lived there until the estate of Davis Whelchel Sr. had been settled in 1833. William and his son Davis were in Polk Co. on March 7, 1839 when he was witness to his brother John Whelchel's, "Will" there is a record of him attending his mothers funeral in Missouri in 1846. William & Keziah had two children in TN and then had ten more after moving to IN. They moved to Bates Co.,MO in 1833 to 1844, Nancy Barnes Whelchel died at Wm. and Keziah's home Oct. 26, 1846, in McDonald Co., MO. They moved in 1852, to Fayette, Cedar Co.,AR until 1854. The last place known that they moved to was to a farm on Sugar Creek in McDonald Co., MO.
** Notes from Bill Whelchel's "Through the Mists of Time" the Whelchel's. He found an Affidavit filed with the Federal Government in May of 1854 which states, "I was living with my wife, Keziah and our twelve children, in Cedar County, MO in January 1852 when I moved them to a place called Fayette, Arkansas. We lived on a farm there until January 29, 1854 when I moved them back to MO and settled on a farm on Sugar Creek in McDonald County, very near the Arkansas border".
There is no other record of the elder Whelchel's it is assumed that they lived in McDonald Co., for the remainder of their lives, William was 67 and Keziah was 70 at the time.
