Born to Barton and Zeruah Allen, Gardner was one of the five Allen boys who served in the Civil War (Co B 188th NY Vols.)
Gardner married Catharine Mann in 1855. Catherine died very young and after her death, Gardner married Rosannah Curry and they had eight children; Alice, Bernard, Edward, Edmond, Bernie, Dora, Hattie, and Wallace.
Gardner died in 1893 in New Albany, PA.
