Obituary of J. Sanford Tilley:
"Joel Sanford Tilley was born October 28, 1839, and departed this life on February 10, 1918, following an illness of only a few hours. Mr. Tilley's early life was spent in Kentucky where he received a good education which enabled him to follow the profession of teaching. He migrated to Shelby County, Illinois, in young manhood and resided in this vicinity for over 50 years where he engaged in teaching school for 20 years. The last 30 years of his life was spent on a large farm which he owned in rural township. Mr. Tilley was married August 12, 1862, to Anna Eliza Payne who survives him and to this union was born 9 children, all of whom are living with one exception. Susie who died in 1892 at the age of 19 years. The surviving children are Willis Tilley of Colorado; Mrs. Jennie Robinson of Tower Hill, Illinois; Lincoln Tilley of Fisher, Arkansas; Joe Walter Tilley of Oklahoma; Truman Tilley of Tower Hill, Illinois; Lulu Tilley of St. Louis; Sam Tilley of Tower Hill, Illinois, who is Treasurer of Shelby County; and Ben Tilley of Colorado. Also, one sister, Mrs. George Parr, Lakewood, Illinois, and one brother, Gideon Tilley of California. Also leaves 35 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Funeral service Christian Church, Henton, Illinois, February 13, 1918." The Death Certificate for Joel Sanford Tilley is in his file. His cause of death is listed as "natural causes". He is buried in the cemetery near Henton, Illinois.
