Martin Vernon Barnett was born June 21, 1918 in Holdenville, Oklahoma to Amanda and John Ivy Barnett. He passed away June 29, 2011 at Clinton, Oklahoma at the age of 93 years and 8 days.
Martin grew up and attended schools in Calvin and Mayfield. At the age of 14 he went to work as a farm laborer. He entered the United States Army in 1941, where he was stationed in Algeria - French Morocco, Sicily, Normandy and Northern France. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to the Western Oklahoma area where he farmed in the Cheyenne and Sayre areas before buying his own farm north of Sayre. Martin also worked in construction and the oilfield for 12 years before retiring and returning to farming. He enjoyed traveling and seeing different parts of the country, tending his cattle, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. Martin was also a member of the Sayre Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, Lorene Lee Wilson and Geneva Nell Gill; an infant son, Larry Don Barnett and 3 brothers, Floyd Ivy, Marvin Metz, John Willie "Bill" Barnett.
He is survived by his 5 children, John Barnett and wife, Karen, Elk City, OK, Mary Katherine Bashaw and husband, Mike, Elk City, OK, Marlene Barnett, Oklahoma City, OK, Mike Barnett and wife, Loveta, Amarillo, TX, and Kevin Black and wife, Teressa, Texola, OK; 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Walton Barnett, Skellytown, TX, Harmon Barnett and wife, Helen, Holdenville, OK, and a host of other relatives and friends.
