Sylvester G. Chappell was employed as a blacksmith for the Pennsylvania RR. He was a member of Lodge 252 Free and Accepted Masons and the Veterans Association of the P.R.R.

His parents were Charles E. Chappell (1860-1895) and Leola A. Chappell (nee Reynolds). His middle name was given in honor of President Garfield, who died the year before Sylvester was born. His father died when Sylvester was only 13 years old; so, he and his two sisters, Ethel and Vera, were raised by their paternal grandparents, Ira S. and Sybil O. Chappell in Westons Mills.

He married Camilla Mae Jackson on May 23, 1904 in Olean. He died suddenly at home, 120 N. 14th Street, of an aneurysm on October 6, 1937.

Millie and Sylvester Chappell had seven children:
