Charles died at the age of 26 from blood clot complications suffered as a result of an injury to his knee while he was working with his brother, Lawrence, at a gas station in Olean. He married Erma C. Mead of Bradford in 1930 and made his home in Olean. Erma published at least two memorial poems to him after his death that appeared in the Olean Times Herald (Dec 5, 1940 and Dec 5, 1945).
Charles and Erma had only one son, Robert Irwin Chappell (1931-1985), who was killed in Papua, New Guinea, while doing missionary work there. Son Robert and his wife had seven children and lived in Niagara Falls and Buffalo, NY. Robert, is buried in Papua.
Erma's name and birth year are on the same stone as Charles', but she remarried some time after 1945 to Austin Somerton and is physically buried in Buffalo, NY.
