Henry was a son of William P. Coonce (1841-1872) and Mary A. Baysinger Coonce Freeman (1847-1923). Henry's widow Mary Elizabeth Amos Coonce (1871-1935) married Sterling Price Lundy (1862-1946). Henry and Mary's children were daughter Ruth Ann Coonce Beekman, and sons Noah James Coonce (1894-1973), Joseph Benjamin Coonce (1896-1915), and George William Coonce (1898-1915).

The Holt County sentinel., October 20, 1899 - Died, near Big Lake, Thursday Oct., 5, 1899, from consumption, George H. Coonce, aged 33 years. He leaves a wife, four children and his mother to mourn his departure to the other shore.

Mound City News - Independent October 12, 1899 page 8. G.H. Coonce departed this life October 4, and was buried in the Mound City cemetery the following day. The family have the sympathy of the entire community.
