WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. Richard Smith Rumley, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 31, 2009. He was born December 13, 1928 in King, NC, to Eugene W. and Carrie Parrish Rumley. A veteran of the U. S. Navy, he served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was very active in the V.F.W. where he was past Commander of Post 8593 and District 11. Mr. Rumley was a member of Union Gospel Baptist Church and he retired from Roadway Express with 28 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; and five brothers. Surviving are his loving wife, Violet Stewart Rumley, of the home; two sons: Rickie D. Rumley and wife, Jenny D., of Rural Hall and Richard B. Rumley and wife, Alice C., of Greensboro; a step-daughter, Jannette "Jan" Hubbard of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren: Briana and Brooke Rumley; three step-grandchildren: David, Shannon and Travis; and a sister, Ruth Weavil of Winston-Salem. In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews; a special little cookie maker, Candice Cooke; and his special little dog, "Cody". Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 2, at Salem Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Darrell Hampton, the Rev. Grant Page, and Chaplain Ann Dalton officiating. Burial will follow in King Memorial Park with Military Honors by the V.F.W. Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 1, at the funeral home. The family would like to thank all of Richard' s caregivers, Dr. Walter Wray and his staff, nurses, Darlene Ewing, Joy Cooke, and Hospice. Online condolences may be made through www.salemfh.com.
