Maternal lines from Surry County, NC & paternal lines from Chatham County, GA.

In late 1800s and early 1900s there were no NC state-wide birth records. However, a file for Surry County delayed births can be seen at: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSZX-PH2H?cc=2848682

Surry County - created in 1771 from Rowan and Orange counties and included all of current day Forsyth, Stokes, and Yadkin counties as well as all land westward (Tennessee did not exist back then)

Stokes County - created in 1789 from Surry County. Current borders with Surry, Rockingham, Forsyth, Guilford, and northern border with Patrick & Henry counties in Virginia. When created it included all land that would later become Forsyth County.

Forsyth - created in 1849 out of Stokes County. Also, Winston-Salem did not exist until 1913 when the towns of Winston and Salem were merged. Shares border with Stokes, Yadkin, Davie, Davidson, & Guilford counties. Also, Abbott's Creek Township is in Forsyth "and" Davidson County, so be sure to know the difference.

Yadkin County - created in Dec 1850 from Surry County. In 1850 Surry County census it was referred to as the "southern division" of Surry County (see 1850 Surry census). Shares borders with Surry, Forsyth, Davie, Iredell, and Wilkes counties.

Am providing these counties as a guide to ensure members have the correct location for counties. If someone was born, married, or died in Forsyth County before 1849, in reality it probably was in Stokes, or possibly Surry, Wilkes, Guilford, or Davidson so you'd need to check the records in those counties.

Maternal ancestors are Patterson & Whitaker in Surry County, NC. Others were Crissman, Logan, Ring, Evans, Shore, and Jefferson. Indirect links are to Fulk (Falk, Fulp, Volk, Volck, etc.), Redman (Redmon, Redmond), Haymore, Roberts, Stone, Flippin (Flippen), & Jessup (Jessop)

Paternal ancestors are Carter in Chatham County, GA. Direct paternal lines include Carter, Wells, Groover, Lightsey, Tillman, Barber, Price, Mobley, Deveraux, & Robinson. Indirect Carter ancestors include Zittrauer (Effingham Co, GA), Collins (Mitchell Co, GA), as well as Stuart, Scott, Mercer, & Haselton of South Carolina counties of Georgetown, Marion, & Williamsburg.
