Ezekiel S. Cross

Ezekiel S. Cross 1931 - 2008 SHAFTSBURY, VT. Ezekiel S. Cross, 76, retired Assistant Judge of Bennington County died Feb. 29, 2008 at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Bennington on Oct. 2, 1931, son of Ezekiel A. and Inez Montgomery Cross, he was raised on the family dairy farm on Harwood Hill, Route 7A. He attended local schools and Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, Mass. In 1997 he attended the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada in Reno, Nev. He proudly promoted for the Bennington Banner for 40 years. He loved the town of Shaftsbury and served it faithfully beginning in 1964 as a selectman. He continued to serve for nine years and was a Justice of the Peace for 15 years. Mr. Cross served the State of Vermont on various boards including the Health Policy Council and the Lottery Board. In 1988 he was elected to the office of High Bailiff of Bennington County. At the time of his death he was a member of the Vermont Board of Medical Practice. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bennington, the local and state levels of the National Grange and held offices in the local Grange, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Bennington Lodge 567, Vice Chairman of AARP 269, the National Judges Association and the State and County Judges association. He and his wife, the former Mary Lou Reed, enjoyed traveling in the United States and England. He was also a partner in Mary Lou's Bakery for 30 years. Mr. Cross leaves his wife of 54 years, Mary Lou Cross of Shaftsbury; a son, Peter Cross and his wife Paula; two daughters, Kimberly Bessette and her husband, Stephen, and Doris Bigart and friend, Michael Lemieux; his daughter-in-law Pamela Cross; five grandchildren, Eric Cross, Joshua Cross, Christy Bigart, Alex Cross and Emily Cross, and two great-grandchildren, Cole and Makenna Cross; his brother, Carroll Cross, his sister, Freida Pello Sears, and his mother-in-law, Mae Reed age 91. He was preceded in death by his son, Alan, who died in 1988 and his son-in-law, Todd Bigart, who died in 2004. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services for Mr. Cross will be held Thursday, March 6, 2008 at 11 a.m. at HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME, 213 West Main Street Bennington, Vt. The Rev. Deborah Estey of the First United Methodist Church in Bennington will conduct the service. Interment will follow in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday, March 5, from 5 to 8p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The following organizations are asked to meet at the funeral home at 6:30p.m. on Wednesday to pay their respects. Taconic Grange 491 and BPOE 567, Bennington Lodge. A time of fellowship and refreshments will be held at the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks 567 Bennington Lodge, following the service on Thursday. Ezekiel S. Cross 1931- 2008 SHAFTSBURY Ezekiel S Cross, a well-known resident of Shaftsbury died Feb. 29 at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness, he was 76. His brother Ludell Cross pre-deceased him in 1931. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services to celebrate the life of Ezekiel S."Zeke" Cross were held at the HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME on Thursday morning March 6. The service was conducted by the Reverend Deborah Estey, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Bennington. The eulogy was given by longtime family friend Timothy Corcoran, personal reflections and memories were shared by grandson Joshua Cross. All spoke of Zeke's devotion to his family, community involvement and being a good person. En-route to the family lot in Shaftsbury Center Cemetery the funeral cortege paused at the family home on Main Street in Shaftsbury, committal prayers were offered by Reverend Estey. Serving as bearers were Alex Cross, Joshua Cross, Eric Cross, Merle Cross, Stephen Bessette and Michael Lemieux. A memorial reception followed at the Bennington Lodge of Elks. Among the many friends and family attending the services were several area business and community leaders and public officials. On Wednesday evening services were held by members of the Bennington Lodge of Elks #567 and Taconic Grange #491 who were assisted by members of the Vermont State Grange. Attending as delegations were members of American Legion Post 13 and AARP Chapter #269 in Bennington. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.
