"Eli was born in the mountains of Putnam County, Tennessee on July 13, 1864, at a place known as Possom Trot. When Eli was eight year old his father died of pneumonia. A few years later his mother was remarried to a widower, Francis Marion Bumbalough who had several children. About 1885 the family moved to Arkansas to a place called Rhea's Mill.

Here at Rhea's Mill in 1892 on June 14, at the age of twenty-eight, he was married to Ocie Lois "Birdie" Brooks. In the early 1900's he moved to the Indian Territory of Oklahoma. Eli was a tall man, being about six and a half feet in height. To Eli and Birdie was born three children, but their marriage was to last only a few short years. Birdie died April 14, 1897.

On January 23, 1901 he was remarried to Mary Lucretia Cox who was born August 22, 1874. To them was born one daughter. Eli died June 5, 1944, and Mary Lucretia died June 3, 1969. From 1901 to 1904 Eli Clouse was Deputy Sheriff of Washington County, Arkansas. But he spent most of his life farming in Arkansas and Oklahoma.
