Elijah Crockett Clouse is the son of Susan (There is no evidence of Susan's maiden name) and Thomas Jefferson Clouse. They lived in Putnam County, Tennessee. Around Elijah's birth was the time when Thomas moved from Cedar Creek area to the mountains in the Calfkiller area in Tennessee. Thomas remarried two more times and had more children. Thomas and his wife are buried on Phifer Mountain at Possum Trot where the Possum Trot Church was and the Bumbalough School were. See Clouse Bumbalough Cemetery.

Elijah served in the Union Army, Company K, 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry during the Civil War. Elijah served next to his brother William. Their other brother Frances served in Company B, also on the Union Side.

Elijah spent most of his life on Phifer Mountian and that is the place where he met his wife Delina Jane Bumbalough.
The two were married around 1860. Elijah and Delina had 11 children: William, Marion, Charles, Haley Elizabeth, Levi, Wesley, Samantha, Mary Lou, Oliver, Elijah JR, and Dora.
