During World War II, Emily raised the children while Arnold worked as a civilian at an Air Force Base in Richmond, Virginia, returning to Middletown, Pennsylvania (a town nine miles southeast of Harrisburg) in 1945.
Emily died on 20 Feb 1965 at age 66 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Her obituary was published in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania The Patriot on 22 Feb 1965 on page 10.
