Walter was born Mar 11, 1904 in London, England. His father, William J. Shewan (1867 - 1947), was born in Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. His mother, Elizabeth Collins Dance Shewan (1869 - 1952), was born in England.

At age 16, Walter emigrated from the United Kingdom departing Southampton on Dec 21, 1921 on the ship S.S. Caronia, arriving in St. Albans, Vermont on Dec 29, 1921. Also on the same voyage was his sister, Emily Shewan Shepherd (1898 - 1965).

After entering the United States, he lived for a time as an adult in Lawrence Park, Pennsylvania, a suburb outside Erie, Pennsylvania.

On Sep 20, 1927 Walter married Mildred Maloney (1909 - 1974). They had two children:

* A daughter (still living)
* Barbara Ann Shewan Moody Simmons (1929- 2008)

While living in Erie, he worked as an electrician for the Erie County Electric Company and lived at 855 Newton Avenue. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

In 1952, Walter was living in China Lake, California. He later moved to Daphne, Alabama.

Mildred died in 1974. Walter died on May 1, 1987 at age 83.
