Jesse McCrary and Hattie McDaniel both were born in Pickens Co. Georgia and married on October 13, 1904 and made their home in Pickens County. Jesse was a farmer. By about 1910 they had three children Newman, Stella and Pauline and moved to Comanche Co. Oklahoma. They had 2 more children while living there Irene and Horace and moved to Quay Co. New Mexico about 1914 where Jesse homesteaded on land there. Jesse built a half dugout for them to live in and 5 more children were born, Bessie, G. P., Warren, Virginia and Ralph. My dad Horace attended school in San Jon, New Mexico as I guess all the kids did who were old enough to go to school while living on the homestead. The family stayed there until about 1933 when they moved to House, New Mexico. By the time they moved to House, New Mexico 5 children (Newman, Stella, Pauline, Irene and Bessie) had married and left home. My dad Horace wanted to finish his senior year in San Jon so he was invited to stay with the school superintendent until he graduated. Therefore when Jesse and Hattie moved to House G.P., Warren, Virginia and Ralph were the only ones who moved with them. I Can remember going to visit my grandfather and my grandmother at their farm close to House, NM and playing in the grain bin and barn. They had no electricity at the farm and used a wind charger to generate electricity for their radio which I remember him listening to. They had a large pot belly stove in the living room. He died of a stroke when I was 7 years old.
