Lawrence Leon Epperson, 96, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 16, 2011 of natural causes.

He was born July 16, 1915 in Provo, Utah the eldest son of Lawrence Theophilus Epperson and Mary Loretta Pritchett's nine children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn Bartlett (Gwenn) Finch, and his sisters and two of his brothers.

He is survived by his second wife, Suellen Slocum Smith, his wife of nine years, his four daughters, Carol Nuttall, Cheryl Twitchell, Vesta Metzger, and Velma VanderMeide, his younger brother, Gerald Jean (Jerry) Epperson, and a lot of grand, great-grand, and great-great- grandchildren.


The family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where Lawrence attended West High School where he competed in diving. After graduating he left Salt Lake and moved to Washington, DC working alternately at the NRA, WPA, and GAO.

Enrolling immediately at George Washington University and continuing at the National Law Center until he graduated Juris Doctor. After retirement he received his MPA from Brigham Young University, at age sixty-nine.

After graduation from law school Lawrence married Gwenn Finch and returned to Utah to serve as Secretary and Clerk to Justice David W. Moffat of the Utah Supreme Court. Later when offered a US civil appointment as a legal assistant in Washington D.C. they returned.

Over the years Lawrence has worked for the US Justice Department, Office of the Secretary of the Army (taking military leave for Army service in World War II).

Then transferred to the National Bureau of Standards, before returning to the Department of Army. He worked as a negotiator for Germans working for the Allies after the war as Chief of Classification and Wage Administration.

They then moved to Frankfurt, Germany and he was assigned as the Civilian Personnel Officer of Northern Area Command.

He accepted a position with the Department of Army Field Office of Sunnyvale, California as Civilian Personnel Program Inspector for the US and Far East. He has served in Rangoon, Burma, Saigon, South Vietnam, and Tokyo, Japan.

Larry was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In Washington, DC he and Gwenn were Stake Missionaries. While in Heidelberg, Germany he helped organize the first LDS Serviceman's Branch, and later became the Branch President.

In Vietnam he was again called to be a Branch President of the LDS Servicemen's Groups, and after retirement he and Gwenn served two genealogy missions, one in Frankfurt, Germany and the other in New York City.

His family was very important to him. He loved his four daughters very much. He tried to be the kind of father that was interested in their well being and activities. He also loved his grandchildren very much.

After his wife died he meet Suellen Slocum Smith and finally convinced her that She should marry him. They were married in the Provo, Temple on December 14, 2002. They were very active until Larry had a stroke. Suellen has been a very loving and caring wife to Larry until he passed away.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the Edgemont Ninth Ward Chapel, 4300 North Canyon Road, Provo, UT. Friends may call Thursday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Anderson Sons Mortuary, 49 East 100 North, American Fork, UT, and Friday from 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. at the church prior to the services.
Burial will be in the American Fork Cemetery.
