Vaughn Elmo Epperson, distinguished World War II Veteran, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Dec. 20, 2007, with his "sweetheart" of 60 years at his side.




Vaughn was born July 20, 1917, in Provo, Utah to parents Lawrence T. and Mary Loretta (Pritchett) Epperson. Raised in Salt Lake City graduated from West High School in 1936, commenced the study of Engineering at the University of Utah. In March 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps believing that the war then in progress would involve the United States. He attended Officers Candidate School and rapidly rose to the rank of Captain. He served from 1941 to 1945 and saw more than three years of action in the North African and European Theaters and advanced through Italy, France, and into Germany with the 591st Combat Engineering Battalion.





He returned home in 1945 and met the love of his life, Margaret Ann Stewart Hewlett, and was married on March 4, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple. Following his marriage, he continued with military service as Major in the National Guard until 1951 and as Colonel in the Utah State Guard (1952 1970). Having completed his Civil Engineering Degree at the University of Utah; his employment included Utah State Road Comm. (1951 -1954); and Kennecott as a design/plant engineer (1954 1978); Consulting engineer through Vaughn Epperson Engineering Service Co. (1978 -1987). Family, church and country were the cornerstones of his life. He used his professional skills as an engineer and surveyor to preserve and enhance the family legacy at the Stewart Ranch in Woodland, Utah. He spent many years working on projects at the Ranch for the benefit of his extended family. He was loved and respected by all who knew him for his tireless service to others, teaching his children that "service is happiness." He had a steadfast faith in God and was an active member of the LDS Church. He had a passion for genealogy and family history. He spent hundreds of hours doing research in the Family History Library, performing extraction missions in the Bonneville Family History Center, and even traveled to France to pursue his research.





Survived by his wife, Margaret Ann; and children, Vaughn H. (Cathy) Epperson; David H. (Diane) Epperson; Katherine (Franz) Amussen; and Lawrence S. (Janet) Epperson, 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and brothers Lawrence and Gerald. Preceded in death by his daughter Margaret Ann Epperson.




Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Sat. December 22, at the Bonneville 2nd Ward, 1535 East Bonneview Dr (1050 S). A Viewing will be held Fri. Evening from 6:30 8:30 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple and at the Ward Sat. morning from 10:00-10:45 a.m.
Interment: Woodland, Utah.
