Pilot News- Wednesday- May 20,1914-Lewis Gillis, a well known retired farmer od LaPaz dropped dead from heart failure upon the street near his home Friday evening about 4:30. He had been a sufferer from that disease for a long time and while assisting some surveyors who were working to find his boundary line was stricken, death coming before medical aid could arrive. He was born in Wabash county,Indiana May 28,1851 where he lived until at age of 15 when his parents moved to a farm 4 miles north of South Bend. In October 1,1874 he was married to Miss Ella (Ellen) Smith, To this union two daughters were born, Mrs.Chas Mangun and Mrs.Chas Bestly both of South Bend. His wife dying, he was married in 1879 to Angeline Mangun. To this union were four children. Charles of Lakeville,Albert on the old homestead and Esther at home, one child,Ollie, preceeded her father to the spirit world. He leaves besides his five children a wife, two brothers,John D.of South Bend and George of Kansas, one sister Mrs Martha Chambers of South Bend and many friends and relatives. He was a member of the Brethren Church in which he took much interest.Funeral services were held Monday at 8:30 at the County line church. Internment in the cemetery six miles south of South Bend.
