NORFOLK - Marvin W. Gesell, 73, of Norfolk, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at his home.

Services were today at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk with the Revs. Frank Winter and Steven Heinsen officiating. Burial was at the New Lutheran Cemetery in Norfolk, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1644 and The American Legion Post 16 of Norfolk.

Mr. Gessell was born in Miltona, Minn., on March 10, 1930, to John and Amalia (Hartfiel) Gesell. He had the distinction of being the first male in his school district to graduate from high school at Parkers Prairie, Minn., in 1947. Following his graduation, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on June 21, 1947, and took part in the Berlin Air Lift after World War II. He received his discharge on June 19, 1950.

On July 26, 1953, he married Lucille Dreyer in Norfolk. They made their home in Norfolk, where he worked at various sales positions. Later, they moved to Spokane, Wash. They returned to Norfolk in 1961 to farm, and he worked at Montgomery Wards and Star Clothing.

In 1964, he started work at the Norfolk Post Office. He became the postmaster at Genoa, and later held the same position in Piedmont, Mo., and Chaffee, Mo. Following his retirement from the post office, He went to work at Wal-Mart in Cape Girardeau, Mo., until they returned to Norfolk in October 2002. He was employed at the Norfolk Wal-Mart at the time of his death.

He was a member of the Genoa Legion Club and a past president of the Lions Clubs in Genoa, Piedmont and Chaffee. He had been an elder at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Spokane, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson, Mo., as well as an usher, school board member and an elder at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk.

Survivors include his wife; five children, Pamela (Terry) Dede of Norfolk, Thomas (Vicki) Gesell of South Sioux City, Scott (Betty) Gesell of Evergreen, Colo., Gregory (Jodean) Gesell of Fremont and Phillip (Luanne) Gesell of Norfolk; 12 grandchildren; six sisters, Clara Venske of Wadena, Minn., Ella Bettermann of Two Harbors, Minn., Gertrude Grothmann, of Grandin, N.D., Violet Backhaus and Viola Freudenburg, both of Alexandria, Minn., and Vergene Henning, of Miltona, Minn.

Marvin was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Memorials may be directed to the Christ Lutheran School.
