Sylvester "Sy" Gesell, age 82, a resident of Miltona, died August 1, 2004 at his home.
Funeral services were held August 4th, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Miltona with Rev. Noel Herr officiating. Burial took place at the church cemetery.
Sylvester "Sy" Gesell was born December 31, 1921, to John and Amelia (Hartfiel) Gesell in West Miltona, Douglas County. He was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, West Miltona. He attended country school and farmed until he entered the military in April of 1943. In November of 1945, he was honorably discharged after serving in Casablanca, Africa. In June of 1948, he was united in marriage to Irene B. Grothmann. He spent some time in the trucking business with his brother-in-law, Kermit Venzke prior to entering into the meat cutting business. He spent three years in Menahga, before purchasing the Miltona Locker Plant. Sy owned and operated the Miltona Locker Plant for a number of years, selling retail meat and doing custom butchering. After selling the meat market, he worked for the Miltona Creamery and eventually managed the Municipal Liquor Store in Miltona for 13 years. Following his retirement, he worked at Arrowwood Resort in Alexandria. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where he served in many leadership positions. He was an active member of the V.F.W., American Legion and Miltona Lion's Club. In addition to being active in the many Miltona community events, he enjoyed golfing and bowling.
Sy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Irene, sons Michael (and LuAnn) Gesell and Paul (and Nancy) Gesell both of Alexandria, daughters Cheryl (and Matt) Frantesl of Flippin, Arkansas, Joan Schunn (and fiancé Kevin Blatz) of Nampa, Idaho, Lori and (Loel) Hawkinson of Miltona and Linda Gesell of Cheyenne, Wyoming, 15 grandchildren, a brother Lawrence Gesell of Parkers Prairie, sisters Ella Bettermann of Two Harbors, Gertrude (and Carl) Grothmann of Grandin, North Dakota, Violet (and Arnold) Backhaus, Viola Freudenberg, both of Alexandria and Vergene (and Kenneth) Henning of Miltona and a sister-in-law Lucille Gesell of Norfolk, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Clarence and Marvin and a sister Clara. Pallbearers were: John Gesell, Dennis Venzke, Carl Henning, Dwayne Betterman, Tom Gesell, Keith Backhaus, Joel Grothmann and Bill Freudenberg.
