John was born Oct. 5, 1836 in Marshall Co., Ind. He died May 20, 1925 at the Wisconsin Veteran's Home, Waupaca, Wis., aged 88 years, 7 months and 15 days. His remains were buried in Riverside Cemetery, Ladysmith, Wisconsin.

On Sep. 20, 1857 John was united in marriage to Elizabeth Kinett, by Reverend Barnhill, at Argos, Marshall Co., Ind. Her date and place of birth, death and burial are unknown. She may have predeceased John as there is no record that she filed for a widow's pension. Their known children were:

John was a Civil War veteran of Company D, 9th Indiana Infantry & Company I, 151st Indiana Infantry.

John enlisted September 7, 1861 at Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana, to serve three years as a Private in the 9th Indiana Infantry. On an unknown date he was mustered into Federal service with Company D at La Porte, Indiana. At that time he was listed in the Company Descriptive Book as a 25 years old 5'11" tall farmer, with light hair, hazel eyes and a light complexion, born in Marshall County, Indiana.

On February 3, 1862 John was discharged under a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability at Fetterman, Virginia, having served 4 months and 26 days. On his discharge the examining surgeon noted that he was incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of:

"Rheumatism resulting from extreme exposure while exposed Cheat Mountain and is seems to defy all treatment while in camp life. I therefore recommend his discharge from the service."

On February 13, 1865 John enlisted at Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana, to serve one year as a Private in the 151st Indiana Infantry, and was mustered into Federal service the next day with Company I at La Porte, Indiana. At that time he was listed as a 29 years old, 6 foot tall farmer, with brown hair, hazel eyes and a light complexion, born in Marshall County, Indiana. His enlistment was credited to Wills Township, La Porte County, Indiana. On September 19, 1865 he was mustered out of Federal service with Company I at Nashville, Tennessee. On the muster out roll it was noted that he was due $100.00 of his enlistment bounty and $20.68 of his clothing allowance.

After his discharge, John returned to his family at Argos, Marshall County, Indiana, moving in 1866 to Brookville, St. Croix County, Wisconsin. In 1876 he was living in Ida, Dunn County, Wisconsin. In about 1889 he lived in Wilson, St. Croix County, and Knapp and Menomonie, Dunn County, Wisconsin. In 1890 he moved to Cumberland, Barron County, Wisconsin, where he was listed in the 1890 U.S. Census, Special Schedule. Later he moved to Pine County, Minnesota, where he lived for 5 years. He was also known to have lived in Ladysmith, Rusk County, Wisconsin, and Douglas County, Wisconsin. He lived out the rest of his days at the Wisconsin Veteran's Home, at Waupaca, Wisconsin.
