John Carl Jungk, born August, 1877, enlisted 26. April 1898, in the 49th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Company A. He mustered out at Savannah, Georgia, 13. May, 1899.

John Carl was Dubuque's last surviving veteran of the Spanish American War. For many years, he owned and operated the Jungk bakery and later worked as a government meat inspector at the Dubuque Packing Company.

Marilyn Feller told me she and her parents lived with Carl and Hattie. Marilyn inherited the rocking chair that Carl would rock her in. She also said Carl was a salesman selling his own potato chips. He was involved in a bad accident when returning from one of these trips. Coming down a steep hill he encountered a car driving in his lane. The cars hit head on, Carl put up his knee to keep the steering wheel from stricking his chest with dislocated his hip so badly that he walked with a two inch lifted heel and a cane from that point on..
