JAMES A. MONROE, Principal of the Ontonagon Graded School, Town Clerk and Secretary of the Board of School Examiners, was born in Patterson, N. J., in 1855. He took a regular collegiate course at Cornell University, and graduated in 1880. He then came to Ontonagon, and was employed as clerk for H. H. Rich & Co. He was elected School Superintendent in the spring of 1881, and when the law went into effect that abolished the office, he was elected one of the Board of School Examiners in August, 1881. He was engaged as Principal of the graded school of Ontonagon in 1881 to fill vacancy. He has been retained by the board, and is now serving his third term. Mr. Monroe is a man of superior ability and culture, and under his management the Ontonagon School is working very successfully.

Veteran Attorney and Public Official of Early Days Dead at 87

James S Monroe 87, prominently identified with the development of Ontonagon and Gogebic counties since 1880, died last night at a local hospital after a brief illness following a stroke of apoplexy. He had been a resident of Ironwood since 1886. The funeral is tentatively arranged for Saturday afternoon. The remains will be taken to the Masonic temple Friday and will lie in state there until the services at 2:30 Saturday. Masonic rites will be conducted. Held Many offices- Mr. Monroe an attorney, held numerous public offices in both Gogebic and Ontonagon counties. Including service for 10 years as a member of the state legislature, and many years of service as attorney for the Ironwood school district. He was born in Patterson, NJ December 29, 1854, the son of Peter S. Monroe also a native of New Jersey. He was reared at West Milford, NJ where he received his early education. In 1870, he went to Norwich, NY and there worked on a farm. He attended Warwick Institute and in 1873, entered Cornell University. His university studies were interrupted by periods of teaching. He was graduated from Cornell in 1880 .He moved to Ontonagon in October 1880, and was employed there as a clerk for a lumber firm until May of the following year, when he accepted the position of principal of the Ontonagon schools. He filled this position until July, 1886. While at Ontonagon, he served as secretary of the county board of school examiners for five years, was a clerk of Ontonagon township and for two years was assessor of the village.

He was married July 1881 to Miss Emma C Mitchell, daughter of Peter Mitchell, Ontonagon pioneer. Mr. Monroe came to Ironwood in July, 1886 when this city was only a small mining camp in the woods. He opened an office here and engaged in the real estate business and the practice of law. He had studied law while in Ontonagon and in October, 1886, he was admitted to the bar at that place.

In 1888 he was appointed superintendent of the poor for Gogebic county, a position he filled for many years. During the panic of 1893-4 no less than 4,500 persons received relief through that office for a period of four or five months. Mr Monroe at that time also was serving as secretary of the county relief committee.

He was county commissioner of schools of Gogebic county for four years, served as city attorney of Ironwood in 1891, and was assessor in 1893.
He built the first residence on the north side of Ironwood, on Norrie Street.
When Gogebic county was separated from Ontonagon county, the meeting at which the details of the boundary were decided was held in Mr Monroe's office here.

Mr. Monroe was a life member of the Masonic order. He served twice as master of the Ontonagon lodge. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thomas MacMahon of Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs T M Bargh of Ely, Minn., formerly of Ironwood.
