Vance M. Cornell
Vance M. Cornell, 94, of Middleton, passed away at a Caldwell hospital Wednesday, June 2, 1999. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999, at the Middleton Cemetery, Middleton. Lee Moberly of Middleton will officiate. Services are under the direction of the Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell.
Vance was born September 5, 1904 in Jewell County, Kansas, the third child of Adelbert and Bessie Matthews Cornell. The family moved to Middleton in 1910 where Vance has since resided. He married Jennie May Stolzenburg at Emmett, July 28, 1928, and he resided in Middleton until his death.
Vance was a master mechanic and inventor of machinery to accomplish tasks that were best done by machinery. His career building machines started as a teenager and continued into his 70s. He built tractors, race cars, ranging from Model Ts to stock cars and built numerous other types of equipment. His most durable machines were a series of onion seed threshers, two winches which were well known for pulling trees, stumps and equipment out of the mud, and a large production-type wood splitter. His ability to tune an engine to get the most out of it was legendary. He did this by ear only and never owned a timing light.
Vance and his wife, Jennie, were charter members of the first board of Canyon County History Committee at the Caldwell Library. He was Fire Chief of the Middleton Rural Fire Department for many years. He will be missed by his family and the community that he supported in many ways throughout his life.
He is survived by his children, Joyce, Blaine, Linda, Darrell, Glen and Chris; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; his sister, Lois Hull; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two daughters, Barbara and Leah; a son, Roger; his parents; and five brothers.
Memorials may be give to the Middleton Library in lieu of flowers.
A luncheon for family and friends will be held at the Middleton Grange Hall following the service.
