MIDDLETON — Graveside services for Mrs. Bessie Viola Cornell, 91, of Middleton, who died Monday in a Caldwell nursing home, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday the Middleton Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Clare Willcuts of the Homedale Friends Church.

Mrs. Cornell was born Sept. 2, 1879, at Burr Oak, Jewell County, Kan., the eldest of 11 children of Charles L. and Hanna Armagost Matthews. She was reared at Burr Oak and taught school there for two years. She was married April 19, 1899, in Harrison Township, Kan., to Adelbert Cornell.

The couple lived near Burr Oak until 1910, when they moved in Jan. to Middleton. They farmed until 1947, when they built a house in town. Mr. Cornell died April 5, 1967, in Caldwell.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Middleton Grange No. 6 and served on the Middleton School Board for a number of years. She was given a life membership on the school board. She also was the first president of the Middleton Parent-Teacher Association.

Surviving are four sons, Clyde Cornell of Kuna, Vance, Boyd and Clark Cornell, all of Middleton; a daughter, Mrs. Lois Hull of Redding, Calif.: three brothers, Stanley Matthews of Caldwell, Thomas Matthews of Arcadia, Calif., and Clare Matthews of Lomita, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Darwin of Guide Rock, Neb., and Mrs. Helen McNichols of Burr Oak; 16 grandchildren, 23 great - grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two sons.
