He had 9 siblings, however only 5 survived (Minnie (Heerdt), Mary (Grierson), Christine (Hampel), Lydia (Reifsteck), Sadie (Reifsteck). Four siblings died as children (George, Laura, Sarah, and Kathryn).
According to draft registration records he was 5'10" and weighed around 155 lbs. He had hazel eyes and brown hair. He was a member of the St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Champaign, Illinois

Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, 20 May 1949 at St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Champaign, Illinois. The Rev. E.H. Busekros presided over the services. He was buried in Section 7 of Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana, Illinois.
