Mary E. Bridges Smith, 2/12/1854-3/14/1913, wife of W.J. Smith inscribed on tombstone. Mary E.'s nickname was Mollie.

Census of 1870, St. Clair Co., AL enumerates Mary Bridges, age 16, still living in the household with her parents, James and Elizabeth Bridges. By the census of 1880, Mary Bridges had married William J. Smith. The census reveals that a child, Preston Smith, born about 1869 was living in the William J. Smith's household. Since Mary Bridges had not married by 1869, it appears that the child, Preston Smith, was the son of William J. Smith and no additional information on an earlier marriage for W.J. has been located at this time. Mollie's census records show she was the mother of 15 children with 12 living. So, if Preston was not actually her child, who was number twelve. The 1910 census shows mother of 15 with 10 living. Uncertain which two children had died between 1900 and 1910.

Census of 1880 and 1900 St. Clair Co., AL shows W.T. as husband. Children: Preston abt. 1869, Maggie V., abt. 1873, Florrence A., abt 1875, Sarah E., abt. 1876, Thomas J., abt. 1877, Henry C., abt 1879, George, abt 1883, Rhoda, abt. 1889, Euclide, abt. 1892, Lonnie, abt 1893-94, and Hilliara (Hilliard), abt 1896. Mary C., born 1884 wasn't listed on these census records and by 1900 she was married.

The 1910 Jefferson Co., AL census showed head of house "Mollie", a widow, with coal mining sons, Joel, abt 1893, and Henry, a widower with 2 children: Willie and Ervin Smith. Also in the household was Mollie's daughter, Rhoda Waldrop, a widow with two small children, Willie Geneva and Ella M. Waldrop. Rhoda married James Crawford Waldrop who died as a young man. Rhoda later married Charles C. Goode.

Mollie's daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, married William Robert Harp. Lonnie's full name was Abraham Leondus Smith. Joe Euclid Smith was enumerated as Joel on some census records. Henry Clay Smith later married a widow, Kate Parker McDill. Maggie Viola Smith married Isaac Mellard Ford. Mary C. Smith married Ira Didson Harris.

Mollie Bridges' husband, William J. Smith, served the Confederacy during the Civil War. William J. Smith's rank was SGT. in Company H, 33rd Regiment on the pension records of Etowah County, AL.
