A car-train wreck on the Muncie Bypass at the Norfolk & Western railroad crossing between Ind. 3 and Cowan Road claimed the lives of three Muncie women Sunday afternoon in what one county policeman said was the worst wreck he has been in nine years.

Police identified the dead as Mary N. Barlow, 39, Sunmore Drive; Maude M. Barlow, 76, and Edna C. Barlow, 43, both of 407 Granville Avenue.

County police say the driver, Mary, was westbound on the Bypass and apparently did not see the approaching northbound freight train. Police say there were no skid marks in the 1:19 p.m. accident.

The car came to rest 54 feet from the point of impact, and two of the bodies were thrown from the car, one landing almost 100 feet from the point of impact.

The engineer of the train told county police he and his brakeman were watching the car as the train approached the crossing, and when it became apparent the car was not going to stop, he told the brakeman to hang on, and he activated the emergency brakes 40 feet before reaching the crossing in a vain attempt to avoid a collision. After hearing the thud of the engine striking the car he looked out the left window of the engine in time to see the car rolling down the embankment and the bodies being thrown clear from the wreckage. He told police the 99-car train was traveling at 40 mph before the crash.

The 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass was destroyed in the accident. The freight engine suffered extensive damage as the collision tore five air hoses from the engine and ben the front end. Police estimated damages to the train at $3,000.

Police say Maude was the mother of Edna and the mother-in-law of Mary. According to the deputy coroner, Roger Fossum, Mary had picked up the mother and daughter and was taking them to her home on Sunmor Drive and was only two miles from arriving.

Maude M. Barlow, 76, was the widow of William M. Barlow. She was born in Fentress County, Tenn., spent her early years in that area, and came to Muncie about 1943. She was formerly employed at Ball Corporation.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Johnnie (Loma) Sexton, Mrs. Thomas (Ella) Mahoney, both of Muncie, and Mrs. Jerry (Dixie) Rench, RR 2, Yorktown; three sons, Waymon, Raymond, and Lowell Barlow, all of Muncie; her sister, Mrs. T.E. Potter, Jamestown, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mary N. Barlow was born in Richmond and came to Muncie with her parents when she was a child. She attended Wilson Jr. High School and graduated from Muncie Central High School.

Surviving besides her husband are her daughter, Lisa, and her son, Stephen, both at home; four sisters, Mrs. Harold (Faye) Buchanan and Mrs. James (May) Hamblin, both of Muncie, Mrs. Violet Moore, Ft. Myers, Fla., and Mrs. Opal Crawford, Moorehead, Ky., and three brothers, Carlos and Sidney, Muncie, and Vernie Crose, Ft. Myers, Fla.

Mrs. Edna C. Barlow was born in Fentress County, Tenn., and moved to Muncie as a child with her parents, William M. and Maude Reynolds Barlow. She graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1951.

She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Johnnie (Loma) Sexton, Mrs. Thomas (Ella) Mahoney, both of Muncie, and Mrs. Jerry (Dixie) Rench, Yorktown; three brothers, Waymon, Raymond and Lowell Barlow, all of Muncie, and several nieces and nephews.

The Meeks Mortuary will announce the arrangements.
