Obituary

Calais, April 8 - Colin Campbell Whitlock, one of this city's most prominent and respected merchants, died at his home on Germaine street at 12:20 o'clock this morning.

Mr. Whitlock was born in St. Andrews, N. B., on July 28, 1858, the fourth son of Margaret Campbell and Samuel Hallett Whitlock. As a young man he came to St. Stephen, N. B., as a clerk in Smith & Murray's dry goods store. Shortly after settling in St. Stephen he became acquainted with Annie Inches, daughter of Col. Joseph (sic) Archibald Inches, whom he later married. In a few years he moved to Milltown, N. B., and entered the grocery business with his youngest brother, Robert Watson Whitlock. In 1887 he moved to Calais where for many years he conducted one of the largest and most enterprising grocery stores in this section. At the same time for a period of years he conducted a saw mill and lumber operation.

Later the government erected a lighthouse designated as Whitlock's lighthouse at the Narrows in the St. Croix river to replace a red light Mr. Whitlock had maintained there.

About 29 years ago Mr. Whitlock retired from the grocery business and since then has conducted the St. Croix Book Store.

Mr. Whitlock was greatly beloved for his kindly and friendly ways and for his charitable nature, no one's trouble being too great or too small for him to extend a helping hand.

He early became identified with the civic and fraternal life of the community and for years was a working member of the Calais Congregational church.

For years he was prominent in the arrangements for the annual July 4th program, was a member of the St. Stephen Curling club, an active member of the St. Croix club, a past master of Sussex lodge, No. 7, A. F. & A. M. of St. Stephen, N. B., and a past sachem of the I. O. R. M. of Calais.

His principal interest was always his family and in this connectioon he was blessed by an uninterrupted family circle until last November when his beloved wife, Annie Inches Whitlock, passed away. Had they both lived until April 9, this year they would have been able to observe their 56th wedding anniversary.

Mr. Whitlock is survived by three daughters: Helen Inches Johnson of Melrose, Mass., Muriel York Whitlock, Bessie Campbell Whitlock, also an adopted daughter, Marion Lambe, all of Calais, a son J. Lawton Whitlock of Cambridge, Mass., and a grandson, Lawton Hether Johnson of Melrose, Mass., to whom the sympathy of the community is extended.

Funeral services will be held at his late home on Germaine street, Monday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock.
