John Gardner was a farmer in Luzerne and Susquehanna Counties in Pennsylvania. His parents were Jesse Gardner and Christianna Simerell. He was born in 1807, probably in Providence Township, Luzerene, Pennsylvania (now a part of Scranton in Lackawanna County.) Sometime before 1833 he married his first wife, Esther Ann Barrager. He appears in the US Federal Census in 1840 in Greenfield Township, Luzerne (now Lackawanna), Pennsylvania, which is where six of his seven named children were born. About 1845, the family moved to Blakely, Luzerne (now Lackawanna), Pennsylvania and the 1850 census reflects this. After the death of Esther, John moved to Herrick, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, which is probably where he married his second wife, Elizabeth Clark in 1856. He died in Herrick in 1863 but was buried in Montdale, Luzerne (now Lackawanna), Pennsylvania with his first wife Esther and three of their seven children.
