Stephen Gardner was the son of Jesse and Christianna (Simrell) Gardner, born 1796 in Providence, Luzerne (now Lackawanna County), Pennsylvania. He married Abby Foster of Pennsylvania sometime before 1824 and they had nine children together. The family settled in Illinois by April 1838, with Stephen arriving about 1830, as his household is counted twice during the 1830 census; Lawrence Co, Illinois and Greenfield Township, Luzerne (now Lackawanna), Pennsylvania. He died 1 Jun 1844 somewhere in Lawrence County, Illinios (probably Allison.) After his death, his widow moved to Greenwood County, Kansas where she died, but was buried in New Albany, Wilson, Kansas.
