Joseph Chaplin was the son of David and Mary (Bradstreet) Chaplin. He married Lois Hastings in Lunenburgh, April 5, 1764, the daughter of Nathaniel Hastings and Lois Houghton. He lived on the southern slope of Flat Hill.

According to "George A. Cunnigham's Genealogical History of Lunenburg, MA.", ca. 1875, it lists Chaplin's burial site as " He d. (S) " (Lunenburg MA's South Cemetery). There aren't any markers or listings for Chaplin's in the current town burial records.
