Adabelle Chase was born May 4, 1918 on a farm north of Scranton, Iowa. She was the daughter of Benjamin Chase and Emily Waldo Chase.

Adabelle graduated from Churdan High School in 1936 and attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls. She taught country school at Kendrick Township for one year, and Greenbrier Township for one year.

On August 31, 1938, Adabelle was married to Robert A. Carman. While Bob was in the National Guard, Adabelle worked at the J.C. Penney store in Jefferson. Adabelle was a farmwife and mother of five children: Gayle, Nelson, Deborah, Adrienne, and Douglass. Adabelle was a member of First United Methodist Church in Jefferson and belonged to the United Methodist Women. She was a member of Greene County Farm Bureau.

Adabelle Carman passed away July 23, 2011 at Regency Park Nursing and Rehab in Jefferson. She was 93 years of age. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; 4 sisters; 1 brother; and a grandson Lance Corporal Benjamin Robert Carman.

Surviving are her five children: Gayle (Doug) Clark of Dallas City, IL, Nelson (Marie) Carman of Jefferson, IA, Deborah (Jim) Nelson of Jefferson, IA, Adrienne (Richard) Smith of Jefferson, IA and Douglass (Karen) Carman of Jefferson, IA; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services for Adabelle Carman, 93, of Jefferson were at 10:30 am Friday, July 29, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson.

Interment: Jefferson Cemetery.

Visitation: after 11:00 am Thursday, July 28, 2011 at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Memorials: suggested to the First United Methodist Church or Regency Park Nursing & Rehab Center.
