Growing up on a farm, she was quite the artist. Several family members have quilts she made as well as some of her beautiful flower wreaths made by wrapping yarn around spiral shaped wire.

Clara May died as a result of lingering complications from the birth of, Fred, her fourth child. Her first child lived three days. Shortly after their mother's death, Orla and Nathe moved with their father to Illinois to be near Edgar's family.
