Lawrence was a Medical Doctor. He graduated from The College of Medical Evangelists, Loma Linda, San Bernardino County, California with his M.D. in the second graduating class with his brother Leslie. His brother Hersel graduated the following year.

Brenda Jo Butka provides:
"Uncle Lawrence was considered the black sheep, since he left the church and drank and smoked. Aunt Peggy was quite elegant, and Uncle Lawrence supposedly played the horses at Santa Ana. He did have a statue of Man O'War in his fireplace when we visited. He took up painting while he was ill, and my mother quite foolishly gave away our one picture that he had painted--quite a lovely desert scene. He had a huge valuable western painting by some famous painter stored in the rafters of his garage, but I can't remember anything else about it--who, why, why their garage, etc. He had had a stroke when we visited, and died not long after."
"He was the "black sheep" of the family...Had a statue of Man o War in his fireplace, which impressed me enormously. He was also a gifted painter--took it up during a mid-life illness. We used to have a beautiful landscape of his, but my mother somehow lost it somewhere." [3-28-2020]
"Peggy was a tall blonde knockout, very sweet by my very limited memory. We went to their house maybe once when I was about ten."

L. Aileen Butka provides:
"Lawrence, the middle brother, left the SDA church as soon as he graduated from medical school. He was the rebellious one! But he married a beautiful, gracious, high-class woman named Peggy. Growing up all us kids loved both of them. Lawrence practiced all his life in Alhambra, California, and was a much-loved physician in the area. He had one son, Kenny, who was somewhat retarded.
Dr. Lawrence died in his 70's of the complications of diabetes. The Masons conducted his funeral, wearing their quaint little aprons. Peggy had already died.
Dr. Lawrence left a trust fund for his son, who got into alcohol and drugs. I don't know whatever happened to him.
He went through the second medical class with his brother Leslie. He was always good looking."

"He had a coin from the King of Denmark that was given to his paternal grandfather Francis Butka, but Gary never actually saw it."

"ALHAMBRA, Sept. 4.--A modern Spartan youth is waging a brave battle for life in Garfield Hospital. Because he 'didn't want to worry mother,' Warren Newton, 17 years of age, concealed a serious illness for a week, smiling denying that: anything was the matter. Then he collapsed.
An operation disclosed that he had a ruptured appendix and that gangrene had set in. Dr. L. J. Butka, attending physician, declared that the appendix had burst two or three days previously...."

Alhambra Physician sued by Office Assistant for Breach of Troth
PASADENA, June 14.--With the question of who taught the plaintiff to drink featuring the testimony, the $100,000 breach-of-promise suit filed by Miss Dolores Young, 27-year-old physician's assistant, against Dr. L. J. Butka, head of an Alhambra clinic, went to trial this afternoon.
LETTERS ADMITTED
Superior Judge Archbald admitted as exhibits a large sheaf of letters written by the physician to the plaintiff. Miss Young testified she and Dr. Butka were alone together three or four times a week for a period of three years and that they took trips together to Soboba Hot Springs, Caliente and Seattle.
The plaintiff's mother, Mrs. Della Young, testified Dr. Butka asked her permission to marry her daughter. 'I replied,' said the witness, 'that I thought he would make a wonderful son-in-law.'
FROCK TOO COSTLY
Miss Young asserted the defendant gave her an order to buy a dress he had seen in a Los Angeles store window, but that she didn't buy it because 'the price was $75 and that is more than I ever paid for one.' Under cross-examination the plaintiff, a slender brunet, admitted that she was once fined $25 for intoxication and that Dr. Butka paid the fine, although he was not on [sic - at] the party."
[Note: It appears he dated Dolores Young from about 1932-1935].

FAMILY REUNION
Dr. and Mrs. Hersel E. Butka and children, Brenda and Gary, attended a family reunion hold at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Hubert O. Swartout of Arroyo Grande over the weekend of Nov. 15 and 16. Mrs. Swartout is a sister of Dr. Butka. Dr. Swartout is county health officer of San Luis Obispo county and a former health officer of Los Angeles county. Dr. Butka's mother, who is 87 years old, makes her home with the Swartouts. Others present were Dr. Leslie Butka of Pomona, and Elder and Mrs. V. M. Hansen of Arlington, Mrs. Hansen is also a sister of the Drs. Butka; Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence Butka and son, Kenneth, of Arcadia, also attended, Kenneth will be leaving this week to begin service with the armed forces. Before returning to Camino, the Butkas also called on Dr. and Mrs. Jack Elvin of Grover City.
