11-23-2011 email excerpt from granddaughter, Julie Diane Alcorn:
"Leslie was born May 4, 1890 in Enid, [Garfield Co.,] Oklahoma, died at age 78 on Jan 10, 1969."
NOTE: Garfield County is adjacent to the East of Loup County.

Note: Harrison means "son of Henry."
But, Leslie was actually given his middle name after President Harrison who, late in the 1800s, opened up immigration for East Europeans / Bohans / Czech. This middle name continued for three generations.
[Twenty-third President of the United States of America, Benjamin Harrison, born 1833: "Harrison was proud of the vigorous foreign policy which he helped shape."]
Also, April 22, 1889 - The Oklahoma Land Rush began at noon as thousands of homesteaders staked claims; nearly two million acres of land opened up to white settlement was located in Indian Territory, a large area that once encompassed much of modern-day Oklahoma. In 1889, President Benjamin Harrison agreed, making the first of a long series of authorizations that eventually removed most of Indian Territory from Indian control. March 3, 1889 - Harrison announced the government would open the 1.9 million-acre tract of Indian Territory for settlement precisely at noon on April 22. Anyone could join the race for the land, but no one was supposed to jump the gun. Referred to as "Boomers," by the appointed day more than 50,000 hopefuls were living in tent cities on all four sides of the territory. Cases involving "Sooners"--people who had entered the territory before the legal date and time--overloaded courts for years to come; 1905 - white Americans owned most of the land in Indian Territory. Two years later, the area once known as Indian Territory entered the Union as a part of the new state of Oklahoma.

Occupation: Medical Doctor (The College of Medical Evangelists, Loma Linda, San Bernardino County, California, class of 1916, the second graduating class). He graduated with his brother Lawrence and his brother Hersel graduated the following year.

Religion: Seventh-Day Adventist.

Missionary with his wife in China for many years. This is probably why he is shown as absent in the 1930 Census.
6 Apr 1949: He returned to the United States from his missionary service.

Another missionary's son (Harold Fenton Clark - fiance to Aileen) that was in China met Lelia Aileen Butka (Ludington) at Weimar in October 2007 and praised Leslie Butka as the most interesting man he ever met. He said that Leslie told the best stories, very dramatic (e.g., "A man walked into my office with his head in his hands...."). He said that he would like to write a book about Leslie Butka. Dr. Butka was well-respected by all and locals in China believed he could nearly raise the dead.

Sam Coombs provides: Leslie was married, divorced, and then remarried and his second wife went to China with him for ten years.

Brenda Jo Butka provides:
"Uncle Leslie was pretty cool too--looked a lot like Einstein. Aunt Irene was very elegant and their home in Pomona [Los Angeles County, California] was almost like a castle to me when I was little--a gorgeous Spanish style stucco with a huge entryway and beautiful curving stairs. They also had a wonderful collie named Prince. When they retired they built a much smaller but still quite elegant home on the same property. I remember visiting there, and Uncle Leslie was watching wrestling matches on TV. The most memorable match I remember was women's dwarf wrestling, especially with one contestant who was dressed like Pocohontas--an exceedingly short, stout, angry Pocohontas, mind you, but Pocohontas nonetheless. There house and grounds were always like an oasis--I remember picking loquats."

L. Aileen Butka provides:
"When the communists took over China about the 1940s he joined his brother Hersel at the medical building. His wife was gracious and elegant. Beautiful tableclothes, china, flowers. His wife was easy to talk to and confide in and seemed like an ideal mom (but it seemed her children could have turned out better).
The oldest Butka son was Leslie, who with his brother Lawrence graduated in the second CME medical class in 1917. They were a handsome pair, with lots of girlfriends. Leslie married Irene Mattison, from another strong missionary family. One of her brothers, Ole Mattison, became president of the Southern Asian Division, which included India. Another brother, Reggie, became president of the Central American Division which included Mexico and all the small countries south.
Irene and Leslie soon sailed for China, their chosen mission field. Leslie Butka, with Dr. Harold Miller (later known as China Doctor) were instrumental in starting the famous Shanghai Adventist Sanitarium and Hospital, and its vigorous nursing school, which trained hundreds of young nurses. Irene, attractive and refined, became well known for her talents as a gracious hostess. They continued working in China until 1940 when the Communists took over the nation and the hospital. Leslie returned to the States and worked with his younger brother, Hersel, in Pomona, until he was killed in an auto accident at age 76.
Their two children, Ramona and Donald, were educated in the first Far Easter Academy in China through 12th grade, and then went to PUC. Both were smart, good-looking and talented. Ramona was very popular, had lots of boyfriends, but ended up marrying a rather homely, antisocial medical student who was brilliant and a fine violinist. Her husband eventually took over Dr. Leslie's and Dr. Hersel's medical building in Pomona, California. Ramona and Chester, her husband, became careless about church. They adopted four children, but before they grew up, Ramona died of breast cancer at about age 40. Chester later married a warm, Adventist lady, and they sent the kids to Adventist colleges, but I lost track of them.
Son Donald sang well and played the cello. He became a dentist, and married a pretty doctor's daughter, Cleone, he met at P.U.C. They soon left the church, had one son, Anthony, and eventually divorced. I only saw Donald once or twice in later years, but heard he lived his last days in the back room of a horse farm in Nevada and died there, alone.

Obituary:
15 Jan 1969 LaVerne Leader / San Dimas Press, Page 7 (La Verne, Los Angeles Co., California newspaper):
"Services Jan. 15 for Dr. Butka, Killed In Automobile Collision
Funeral services for Dr. Leslie Harrison Butka, prominent Pomona physician and retired medical missionary who was killed Friday in a traffic collision were scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Pomona Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Officiating will be Elder Richard C. Wertz, pastor of the church, and Elder Walter T. Ray former pastor of the Pomona church. Burial will be in Pomona Cemetery. Todd Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Butka was born May 4, 1890, into a rugged pioneer family in Enid, Okla., Indian Territory.
All of his education was received in schools of the Seventh-day Adventist church and at 14 Dr. Butka began working his way through school in Keene Industrial Academy in Keene, Tex., graduating in 1911. His job there was in the school broom shop.
He next took premedical training at Emmanuel Missionary College at Berrien Springs, Mich. In 1916 he was graduated from the medical course at what is now Loma Linda, as a member of its third graduating class which became known for its large number of missionaries serving around the world.
Dr. Butka's intern-ship was served at a hospital in Middleton, N.Y., where he met and married Irene Mattison, a graduate nurse from Boulder, Colo., who was the hospital's superintendent of nurses.
Dr. Butka's first medical post was on the staff of the sanitarium of St. Helena, Calif., 45 years ago. The Butka's two children were born in St. Helena.
In 1924, Dr. Butka left his successful career as a physician and surgeon to serve as a medical missionary in China. He was assigned by the Adventist church to head the staff of its hospital in Yenching, Honan, China.
Because of Internecine wars, the Butkas were forced to abandon their work in Yencing and transferred to a hospital in Korea. When peace was restored in Honan province, they returned to rebuild the hospital, school and church.
In 1931 they took charge of a clinic and 200-bed hospital in Shanghai.
He next became chief surgeon of the new Shanghai Sanitarium but in 1938, when the Japanese forced all Americans out of China, the Butkas came to Pomona where he joined his brother Hershel (sic), in the Butka Medical Center.
They later returned to Shanghai and reopened the clinic but a year later the Communist take-over again forced them out of China and they returned to Pomona to live.
Survivors are his widow, Irene M. Butka of the home address, 133 Base Line rd., LaVerne; his daughter, Mrs. Chester Alcorn of Pomona; his son, Dr. Donald Butka of Anaheim; a brother, Dr. Lawrence Butka of Alhambra; two sisters, Daisy Swartout of Thousand Oaks and Letha Hanson of Riverside; and six grandchildren."

Burial on 1-15-1969 at Pomona Cemetery (Pomona Valley Memorial Park).
