L. Aileen Butka provides:
Being Adventists, with their great emphasis on education, all five children of James Butka worked their way through academy and college. They lived in Enid, Oklahoma, where some of the children were born. This was near Keene, Texas where there was an Adventist school. At that time it wasn't a four-year college, but the girls earned teaching credentials, and the boys got enough pre-med to attend the now Adventist medical school in Loma Linda, California which was just opening.
Meanwhile, the children were struggling to get their education. All five were very bright, and hard workers. Mostly they earned their way through school by selling Bibles and Christian books--they became what we call colporteurs. My father, Hersel, had a talent for languages, and as he worked along the border of the U.S. and Mexico, he picked up Spanish--for the rest of his life people said he spoke Spanish just like a Mexican, no accent at all. My half-brother, Gary, has found evidence that he actually went into Mexico and sold books as far south as Monterey.
All three boys were accepted into medical school at Loma Linda, California, then called the College of Medical Evangelists (CME) (it became Loma Linda University Medical School in early 1960). Because most young Adventist students were poor, they were permitted to work their way through medical school by an interesting arrangement: They went to school for a month and then worked for a month. This continued for five years.
Hersel had taught himself to type, and was good with figures, so he was able to obtain what were then prime jobs as a secretary-clerk. During the school month he often worked nights also. I asked him once how he could keep up his grades and work so many hours. He said that he really listened in class, absorbing all he heard, and thus needed only a brief review in the textbooks for exams.
All three Butka boys graduated and became "physicians and surgeons". The oldest, Leslie, and his brother Lawrence, both graduated in the second class of CME, in 1917 [sic - 1916]. Hersel graduated in the third class, in 1918 [sic - 1917], and married a pretty brunette named Mabel Wirt, a fellow medical student, who graduated in the fourth class, in 1919 [sic - 1918]. Surprisingly, about half the students in Mabel's class were women. Much later I asked my mother why she and quite a few other women took medicine way back then, because in my time very few did so. There were only four girls in my class of 88 medical students. She said it was because Mrs. White encouraged women to take medicine, she had emphasized more women doctors were needed.

1-20-1916 [should be 1917]: Letter from Hersel E. Butka to sister-in-law Ethel T. Wirt (Swaynie) excerpts about wedding - honeymoon:
[Residence] 1614 Pleasant Ave., Los Angeles, CA.
[About their marriage so maybe letter was actually in 1917 and he was used to writing 1916 still] "Needless to say we are happy, just three weeks tomorrow and no signs of it wearing off, only we seem to be getting worse instead of better fast...proud of you and your family...in Indiana...."
"Suppose Mabel has told you of all our experiences on the little trip we had after the wedding, such a pleasant & happy little time we had and then, come back and get right at our work again. I think we will have to have a few more such trips to make it complete. Suppose after I go back to Loma Linda for the reviews and then State Board we will have to have a real Honeymoon then. But we are happy and really love each other and are just "sweethearts" and no one can talk."

Hersel commented often that he liked women to have a little meat on their bones and that's why he got Mabel. [Per L. Aileen Butka].

1912 - 1917: In 1916 [sic - 1917] he was graduated from the medical course at what is now Loma Linda, as a member of its third graduating class which became known for its large number of missionaries serving around the world.
When he attended The College of Medical Evangelists, later called Loma Linda University Medical Center, in Loma Linda, San Bernardino County, California, he was one of the youngest students to begin medical studies. The first year he was so young he wasn't officially accepted. He graduated with a M.D. degree. He was in the third medical class ever to begin [1917] along with his brother Leslie [sic - Leslie graduated a year earlier in 1916 with brother Lawrence] (and his wife, Mabel, was in the fourth class [1918]). Location: Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.

May 1917: Graduated from Medical School - College of Medical Evangelists - then was drafted the "next" day. [Per story he told his son Gary Butka. Graduated in 1917 confirmed per SDA Obituary & LLUMC records.]

Congenital Heart Defect.--In the case cited by Butka, the heart occupied the greater part of the left side of the chest, measuring 18 by 13 by 9 cm.... A survey of the observations in this case led Butka to conclude that this patient suffered from a congenital defect causing the entire blood supply to return from the lungs to the right side of the heart along with the vbenous blood from the superior and inferior vena cava. A portion of this blood passed through the patent foramen ovale and entered the systemic circulation. The symptoms caused by this condition were sufficiently mild to permit the patient's growth to adult life, thirty-one years; and to enable him to earn his living by a life of moderate activity at manual labor, and to support a wife and child."

Jun 1929 - 1932: Hersel took his family of four (Hersel, Mabel, Aileen, & Jean) to South America as an SDA medical missionary to the indians where Hersel headed the Chulumani, La Paz, Bolivia Hospital--the San Yungas Sanitarium and Hospital. Dec. 1931 Aileen became ill and Hersel returned to California, U.S.A. with his family. This is why the 1930 Census shows his family as absent. (Family in Bolivia 1929 - 1932 per Hersel's SDA obituary).

8-6-1929: H. E. Butka and family arrive in Bolivia. (South American Bulletin).

Chulumani Sanitarium and Hospital (Hospital Chulumani), Chulumani, Sud Yungas, Depto de La Paz, Boliva.

There is a story about Dr. Hersel's Butka's experience saving his own would-be assassin's life at Hospital Adventista in Chulumani entitled "Saved Twice" written by Delmer W. Holbrook and published in The Youth's Instructor, Oct. 21, 1958 (3 pages).

L. Aileen Butka provides:
After graduation, Hersel and Mabel lived in Los Angeles, where Hersel taught pathology to medical students for most of the next ten years. In those days, med-students took the first half of medicine in Loma Linda, and the rest at the White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles, California, which was larger and better equipped for the students clinical work. Hersel's teaching was interrupted by army service in World War I, Hersel serving most of his time in France caring for the wounded. While he was gone, Mabel miscarried a baby boy.
Hersel resumed his work at the White Memorial Hospital (WMH), teaching, and working with Dr. Orlyn Pratt to set up the first well-equipped clinical laboratory, then an interesting side-light. Hersel was Medical Director of the WMH when Aileen was born, and thus her hospital birth certificate is signed by her father.
Both Lelia Aileen (1924) and Rozella Jean (1927) were born to Hersel and Mabel while they were at the WMH. In 1928 the couple received a call to mission service in Bolivia. The government had decided to build a hospital in a central village high in the mountains, and had asked the Adventists to supervise its building, and then take charge and operate it. Even at that early time, Adventists had a good reputation for operating hospitals.
Aileen, who was four and Jeannie still a baby, went with Hersel and Mabel and sailed to Peru. They traveled by train, boat, and bus-crossing Lake Titacaca-finally arriving in La Paz, the Capitol of Bolivia. From there, they traveled by mule back for three days to reach Chulumani. Mabel loved music and had brought her large upright piano. Carriers took it as far as the outskirts of La Paz and gave up, brining us only the piano stool!
While the hospital and our home were being built (about ¼ mile from town), Hersel opened an office in an adobe building downtown and we lived upstairs. My father frequently traveled to nearby villages, leaving the clinic to Mabel to run. Hersel said she did very well, even successfully delivering some complicated obstetrical cases.
Our home was soon finished and we moved up there. It was on a hill above the hospital and it was fun watching it being built. Mule trains (10-12 mules) would come in with doors, windows, and supplies. Jean and Aileen became fluent in Spanish, and preferred it to English when they played together.
[Aileen has written a very interesting story of their trials in Chulumani.]
In spite of their best efforts, Hersel and Mabel each lost more than 20 pounds (which they could hardly spare), and Jean and Aileen were soon skin and bones. After 3-1/2 years we were sent home to regain our health. On the way home, we stopped in Germany where Hersel picked up German and took a three-month refresher course in Medicine. This was 1931 and Hitler was just beginning to come to power.
The couple landed in the United States in the middle of the depression, and CME was unable to restore his job. So Dr. Hersel chose to settle in Pomona, California. He found a quadruplex and rented three of the apartments. One became Hersel and Mabel's office, another was where we all slept, and the upstairs one for everything else. At the exact same time another Adventist doctor opened an office next door! He was Dr. Iver Ritchie who pioneered Adventist medical work in Mexico.
After about two years, when we were all healthy again, Dr. Hersel applied to go back to the mission field. During physical exams, however, Aileen was found to have a spot of tuberculosis in one lung, so we could not go. Mabel received Ministry of Healing and put Aileen on an even stricter NEWSTART program. Within a year Aileen was healthy and well.
Hersel and Mabel devoted themselves to their practice, which prospered. Because of Dr. Hersel's fluency in Spanish, he had most of the Mexican population of Pomona and surrounding cities as patients. Soon Hersel rebuilt a burned-out church, and they had their own medical building. Hersel's oldest brother, Dr. Leslie Butka, had spent (2?) years of mission service in China, and had been forced to leave (barely escaped) by the takeover of the Communists. He joined Hersel and Mabel, and the Medical Building sign read, "Butka, Butka, Butka and Butka, Physicians and Surgeons."
Once the practice was well established, Mabel began to cut down her office hours to spend more time with the children. Aileen and Jean were able to finish nine grades at the Adventist church school in Pomona, then went as boarding students to La Sierra, 30 miles away, to finish Academy and begin college.
When Dr. Hersel returned from South America, his mother, Lucy Menefee, was recovering from an auto accident. Her [former] husband, Bill Menefee had died a few years before, and she wanted to move in and keep house and cook for us. This was her way of trying to make it up to Hersel for deserting him at 9 years of age. A still youngish, fun loving woman, she didn't want to be called Grandma, so hereafter she became "Nana" to all of us. These were wonderful years for Aileen and Jean-they dearly loved this "Grandma", the only one they'd known.

After that he moved to Pomona, Los Angeles County, California and built a medical building (known at the Butka Medical Building) where he worked with his brother, Leslie, and with his wife Mabel. Leslie's son-in-law, Chester Alcorn, worked there as well as other relatives. Several family pictures were taken on the steps of this medical building.

He was very active in the Seventh-Day Adventist church and spoke between services.

Hersel loved camping and often took Mabel and his two daughters, Aileen and Jean, camping in their trailer. They traveled across the USA twice, went to Yosemite, Sequoia, etc. Hersel also loved fishing at Lake Elsinore, CA with Jean, and Aileen accompanied them, but not to fish--she came along to read in the boat they owned.

Hersel got interested in shell collecting and over a three year period collected about 2,000-3,000 shells which he donated for display to La Sierra College (Riverside County, California).

Apr. 1936: "Of course, we were all disappointed that Doctor Butka could not come [back to Bolivia] because of the health of their child."

6-30-1936: Letter from Hersel: Hersel and Mabel borrowed $2,642.50 from her sister, Ethel T. Wirt (Swaynie) to start up their medical practice and buy equipment. He repaid this loan (interest only) and wrote a new note for $2,700 at 6% interest 7-1-1937 (increasing the 4% interest rate).

Lelia Aileen Butka provides:
At the second Holt Avenue home Hazel was hired as a receptionist by Hersel and Mabel. She was very sweet and nice. After some time Hersel and Mabel rented her a room upstairs. Nana (Lucy C. Fields) also had a room. And then Aileen and Jean shared a room. They had more room there and Hersel would do tonsillectomies and other minor surgeries at home and put the people in his daughters rooms to recover.
After returning from South America, Mabel and Hersel worked through the depression. Then after they acquired the medical building Hersel would comment how she was a good doctor and well-liked, but she always preferred to do things with the children.
After they moved Mabel hired other people. One time she hired a 16-year-old girl to help out who Aileen and Jean wanted to play with them, but she wouldn't.
Mabel also always fed the hobos on the back porch and steps and brought them out food.
Hersel would say, "If you hold out your hand a bird might light on your hand. If you close your hand, the bird will want to get away. It's the same with friends, if you hold on too tight."

7-10-1936, according to the Pomona Progress-Bulletin Newspaper, Dr. H. E. Butka (senior elder and acting head of the church council) announced the purchase of the old First Methodist church building at Third and Gordon Streets by the local Seventh-day Adventist Church, with its first services to be held the next day. The church cost $5,000, which was about the price of the pipe organ. They called it "Butka's Folly" because he was the one who promoted the purchase, and they were skeptical it was a deal because it was so old (having been built between 1877 and 1909). Hersel donated most of the purchase price. In 1988, that church is the oldest Protestant church building in the Pomona Valley, the oldest public building in the city, and is designated a city historical landmark. The church's tubular pneumatic pipe organ was shipped around Cape Horn and installed in the church in 1888. On 11-1-2004 the City of Pomona voted to approve historic landmark status for the Pomona Adventist Church according to the January 2005 Adventist Review.

Los Angeles, California
At home

Jan. 1932: "Doctor and Mrs. H. E. Butka and children were visitors at the Division for several days during January. Doctors Butka will be remembered for their activities in the Yungas District of Bolivia. They were passing through Buenos Aires on their way to the United States via Europe. Although we were sorry to see them leave South America, we wish them 'Godspeed' and pray that they may continue to be a blessing in His cause." (South American Bulletin).

They traveled through Argentina, around Rio de Janeiro, & Germany for three months where Hersel took a post-graduate course and picked up quite a bit of the German language.
They lived in Berlin, Germany in the main SDA building with rooms upstairs for traveling missionaries to stay. (Per daughter Lelia Aileen Butka).

Hersel had severe hay fever and sweated profusely at night leaving the bed wet, but Mabel never complained. He also kept a machine in the window to bring in clean, filtered air to reduce pollens. According to his daughter Aileen, Hersel had bone deafness.
